The Bridge into Construction course, which will be facilitated by Build UK and Collab Group, aims to convert more learners from construction courses into the industry and will include an overview of the project lifecycle, introduction to a range of construction careers and health and safety training.
To ensure students pursue careers which are available locally, members advised that a key part of the course should entail work experience offered by companies where apprenticeships and training schemes may be available.
Build UK is looking for members to offer a wide range of work experience opportunities to students who will have varied interests in construction. The opportunities, which would ideally be one week long, could include shadowing the:
• design team, for technology-savvy students
• sales team, for students who enjoy customer facing opportunities
• manufacturer, for students who are interested in how things are made
• craft operatives, for those who would like to see a range of trade occupations in action.
Build UK has produced a Future Building: A Guide to Successful Work Experience guide, to support employers in developing suitable opportunities and provide guidance on health and safety, insurance and safeguarding.
Although employers will not be required to pay the work experience students, it is recommended that their travel expenses are reimbursed. Employers interested in providing work experience should be based within easy travelling distance of the following colleges which will be delivering a Bridge into Construction course:
• Bridgwater & Taunton
• Blackpool and the Fylde
• Hull College Group
• College of North East London (Harringey)
• Sheffield College
• Leicester College
• Middlesbrough College.
