Welsh woman named best construction Apprentice in 2019

Ammanford apprentice, mother-of-two Lynsey Davies has beaten builders across the UK to scoop the award for the Best Apprentice in the prestigious Federation of Master Builders’ (FMB) Master Builder Awards 2019. These awards are designed to celebrate the nation’s best builders and the winners have just been announced in front of a packed audience at a ceremony in London.

Nick Knowles, TV presenter and building enthusiast, handed the Apprentice award to Lynsey for her outstanding commitment to the apprenticeship programme.

Lynsey has been an apprentice on the Shard Apprenticeship Scheme (Cyfle Building Skills) since September 2016 having made a big career change at the age of 35. She was accepted on the apprenticeship programme to undertake her Plastering NVQ Level 2 qualification and has been an exemplar apprentice since she started, receiving excellent feedback from all her host companies. After her first year with Cyfle Building Skills, in the summer of 2017, Lynsey was chosen to help manage the organisation’s overseas project out in Uganda – a maternity ward in the village of Kachumbala. As a result of this experience, Lynsey decided that she wanted to go down a more managerial role and applied to be a Technical Shared Apprentice. Judges were hugely impressed by Lynsey, pointing out that her progression is a prime example of what you can achieve within the construction industry regardless of gender or age.

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: "The FMB sees the true value of apprenticeships in training the budding stars of the industry and Lynsey is one of those stars. She bucks the trend by breaking into the industry at a later stage in her life and shows that the construction industry can provide a wonderful career at any age. She has displayed dedication and a keen hunger to learn throughout the process and is a credit to our industry."
