How to secure your spot on a sought-after construction apprenticeship

The UK construction industry needing 135,000 new apprentices by 2021 to help build homes, roads and railways all in a bid to make our lives easier and more enjoyable.

With this in mind there is a huge employment drive for young apprentices in Plymouth.

A construction apprenticeship lets you earn while you learn, putting you on the road to a rewarding career in one of the UK’s most innovative, dynamic and exciting industries and is therefore extremely sought after.

But there is more than meets the eye when it comes to working in construction as there are over 180 job roles to choose from.

With apprentices becoming everything from architects to quantity surveyors, engineers to bricklayers, carrying out everything from demolition to landscaping - there really is a career for everyone.

With Plymouth’s booming construction pipe-line, there has never been a better time to start an apprenticeship and so the Plymouth Guildhall is hosting an apprenticeship job fayre next month.

It will be a great opportunity for those who are wanting to enter the construction industry to meet top employers offering hundreds of apprenticeships in the area.

If you’re looking for an apprenticeship, the first thing you should do is find out which career you are interested in. There are over 100 different apprenticeships in construction to choose between.

Ranging from hands-on crafts like bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, tiling, highways maintenance, demolition, landscaping and scaffolding; to more technical roles like mechanical and electrical, and plumbing; to construction technicians, project management/ quantity surveying and building surveying.

With so many options, you may need a little guidance to find out exactly what would suit you best and so Plymouth’s leading construction and manufacturing businesses are hosting a huge apprenticeship recruitment event as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2018 to assist you in taking the first steps towards your dream career.

Building Plymouth is a council-led partnership that connects local people with career opportunities in the varied and exciting world of construction and the built environment in Plymouth.

And with over 10,000 jobs needed in the city over the next five years, Building Plymouth aims to match employers with a highly skilled workforce to transform the city and beyond.

Aimed at engaging with young people, their parents and family, as well as adults who are considering a career change, the fair aims to promote the benefits of apprenticeships and connect with local employers offering exciting vacancies in both construction and manufacturing.

The Fair will be the perfect place to get inspired as local construction employers will be showcasing their current apprenticeship vacancies across trade on the day to give local talent the best chance at securing their spot on the apprenticeship of their choice.

Technical and professional pathways include: AECOM, BAM, Barratt Homes, Elmes Construction, LTC Scaffolding, Gilpin Demolition, Kier, Midas, mi-space, Obedair, the Plymouth Construction Training Group, Shared Apprenticeship Service SW, Spot On, SWH Group, TClarke, Ward Williams Associates and YGS Landscapes.

Training providers exhibiting on the day include: CITB, City College Plymouth, Cornwall College, Focus Training, Greenlight Safety Consultancy, Sherford Skills Training Scheme and South Devon College. Manufacturers exhibiting include Wrigleys, Princess Yachts and Babcock.

There will be a chance to try your hand at taster activities, competitions, learn more about how apprenticeships work through a series of impartial career talks.

And Gilpin Demolition and Princess Yachts will also be exhibiting outside of the Guildhall.

Building Plymouth and the Plymouth Manufacturers Group have joined forces to organise the Apprenticeship Jobs Fair on Saturday, March 10 from 10am-3pm in the Plymouth Guildhall.
